Blog: 118 How to support women who have a violent man in their life by using charity REFUGE

You might know of someone who suffers domestic abuse – or you may in the future.

REFUGE is the largest domestic abuse organisation in the UK. On any given day their services support thousands of women and their children, helping them to overcome the physical, emotional, financial and logistical impacts of abuse and rebuild their lives — free from fear.

Those of you who know me well, will remember that my father is an extremely violent man, who tried to kill my mum – so this charity is very close to my heart - because REFUGE helped my mum and I to escape from his abuse and got him sectioned, so he lived in a mentally ill home for a while before he went to prison.

If you can afford to donate any money to REFUGE please do, even if you can only afford to give a small amount, every penny counts. You never know you, or someone you know may become a victim of abuse at an unfortunate point of one’s life.

You can find out more about what they do and how they help the women and children of the UK here:

REFUGE relies heavily on donations, which can be made directly here: https://donate.refuge.org.uk/page/51133/donate/1,

or you may want to organise a fundraiser for them. You can find out more here: https://refuge.org.uk/i-want-to-support-refuge/fundraise-with-us/fundraise-your-way/

You can also help by sharing their helpline number and website: https://www.nationaldahelpline.org.uk, whether that's by printing one of their posters (which can be found here: https://refuge.org.uk/what-is-domestic-abuse/information-for-professionals/) or sharing on social media.
