Writer: Laura MacLaura Mac

To live more fully & find greater happiness, one should focus on the present moment by practicing mindfulness. What is Mindfulness? I hear you say. Here’s what mindfulness is and why it’s a great thing to understand & do….

Mindfulness is a mental state of being in the present moment without judgement. It involves noticing & accepting your thoughts, emotions, body & surroundings. It can help you break automatic responses and destructive habits – neither of these are a good thing. It can also improve your mental health, by helping to reduce stress & anxiety. It’ll improve your decision-making skills. Win, win, win!!!

Practising mindfulness sounds like a great thing to do – don’t you think? I do and here’s an example of how I am living my life in a mindfulness (present moment) way…

...I observe my thoughts, emotions & other present moment experiences by writing them down i.e. in my blogs and in the books I’m writing & selling on the website you’re on right now. Part of me being mindful in my daily life is by me meditating every day. All of this has led me to my ‘post-stressful life changing accident (me getting ran over by a car): ’ psychologist ‘Jess’. She has done ‘mindfulness-based cognitive therapy on me. This has helped me out big time – because it has got get rid of my anxiety & depression -  (thankyou Jess). Hopefully you get that I’m a ‘happy positive vibes’ kind of person by reading my writing i.e. my blogs & books. I hope that when you read my writing it makes you feel happy & chuffed to be alive because you have a smile on your face. Win win!! if it has this effect you. A win for both of us don’t you think? It means I’m being a good writer and you’re spending your time wisely. X

Here are some tips on how you can live in the present moment from now on…..

(You might think nope I’m not doing that for a couple of them - but give them a go. Practice mindfulness, meditation & being in the present moment from now. It’ll just become the way you live your life = happier. Practice makes perfect. You’ll be able to say “I’m a very happy, chilled out & energised person - I always will be because I love being alive!”.

To remove distractions that might do your head in & stop you enjoying being in the present moment every day:

1)     Turn off your mobile phone.

2)     Tune into your surroundings – e.g. notice nature (love the trees & flowers) and other people’s company.

3)     Keep a notebook &/or your diary with you, so you can get some perspective & memories kept easily for you. Gone will be the stress of being worried you’ll possibly forget a thing that made you smile.

4)     Forgive past hurts.

5)     Love your job. If you don’t love your job, try to get a new job. Find the right job for you to love your present moments when you are doing it / at the office.

It’s okay if you want to dream about your future such as: your next step(s) in your life e.g. going travelling, moving house, meeting ‘the one’, getting a promotion at work & starting a family i.e. having kids. You should spend your present time working hard at making all of your future dreams possible (to have / happen) for you = focusing on what’s right, happy & healthy for your mind & soul.
