Blog: 209 Are you being courageous – what, when & why?

I had to look up the meaning of the word courageous, because I use it rather loosely. Such as, “Wow! they really stood up for themselves at work and to their partner, they were very courageous”.

The dictionary definition only refers to being courageous when something serious and scary is happening to one.

It says it means this: ‘the quality of being ready and willing to face negative situations involving danger or pain’.

Of course, one does need courage when one is in a dangerous situation – but a bit of physical strength, plus having others there to help you defend you really helps too – don’t you think? Well, I think this is probably true.

I hope you’ve never had to be in a fight or defend yourself from being beaten up. I’ve never had a physical fight with anyone in my adult years – but (please don’t get upset about this example of me having to have a lot of courage). When I was a child, I had to defend myself and my mother from my very violent father.

I won’t go into detail, but I had to be psychologically and physically very strong, throw things at him and hide his weapons. This was to stop the beatings happening to my mother and me. Yes, this was very scary, therefore it took lots of courage and bravery.

It is often thought that facing such situations without fear is how one has courage but facing it despite the fear I felt – shows I had lots of courage.

As an adult, I’ve been there for my friends who’ve doubted themselves when going to interview and hopefully get the job of their dreams. All of them have got the jobs they wanted and deserved, because they made themselves behave like the intelligent, independent, lovely (nice and fun) people they are to work with.

Interviewing isn’t a gentle, fun thing to do hey!  It took a lot of courage for each and every one of them to go get em’.

They chose to recognise their nerves and were willing to act despite them. I said to all of them “Go get em’ hun! We both know you’ve got it in you to be able to do the job very: easily and well. You just need to show them that by you being you: clever, cool, funny, able to help other members of the company while you work independently because you’re a high achiever (list your working world achievements now) you can do the job. You’ll really impress them, and you’ll get the job! They faced their getting the job fear by taking deep breathes and their courage to the max. Success happened, all of them get their chosen jobs! Get in hey!

If you are nervous or anxious about something, letting someone (such as a friend, a parent, or your doctor) know helps reduce your feeling of being alone against it all. The awful negative vibes flushing through you will sod off. Those who matter to you will be able to give you the advice you need. Feeling alone is a crap feeling hey! By being with your mates / family, your act of courage will motivate others to see what is possible.

Go get em’ !...use the courage you know is lurking inside of you. x
